Journey Description

To discover some of the most peaceful and picturesque seaside villages the Fraser Coast has to offer, set off on the Burrum Coast Discovery Trail. It begins just a short drive from Hervey Bay, with the fishing hamlets of Toogoom and Burrum Heads. Here you'll be able to enjoy pristine beaches, cute cafes, nature walks and plenty of wildlife. There are a number of mangrove-lined rivers and creeks that are great places to go fishing, crabbing or kayaking.

Next stop on the trail is the historic township of Howard, 37 kilometres west of Hervey Bay - best known as the former home of Andrew Fisher, the first Labour Prime Minister of Australia. You can then head to the rural village of Torbanlea which has a proud history of more than 100 years of coal mining.

Day By Day Itinerary

Burrum Heads to Hervey Bay

For a longer drive, continue along the Burrum Heads Road, to the mining villages of Howard and Torbanlea on the Bruce Highway.

Head up the road to Panorama Drive and discover the valuable self-sustaining ecosystem at the beautiful Arkarra Lagoons; a haven for turtles, eels fish, ducks, pelicans, waterbirds, insects and many more species. Toogoom to Burrum Heads

Return to the Burrum Heads Road to reach Burrum Heads.

This friendly fishing village is nestled in the mouth of the Burrum River, about 36 kilometres north of Hervey Bay. From the Esplanade you can look across to Hervey Bay and on most days see the top end of Fraser Island.

Take a stroll along the miles of soft, sandy beaches, collect fascinating shells, explore or fish rivers and creeks by boat or canoe or just sit and watch the pelicans and some of the other 90 species of birds that inhabit the area.

Covering 23,1000 hectares, Burrum Coast National Park has mangrove-lined riverbanks, wallum heath with spectacular wildflowers and tea tree-dominated swamps. The southern section of the park, the Burrum River Section, is located on both sides of the Burrum Heads Road, just before Burrum Heads township.

(The central section of Woodgate National Park can be reached from Woodgate Board, 38 kilometres from Childers).
